Kidney Removed by a New Application

In what is claimed to be the first ever surgery in the world, Doctors in the United States have detached a healthy Kidney through a small opening at the back of the donor’s vagina “to reduce the patient’s pain”. The kidney was effectively removed and transplanted into the donor’s nice, and both patients are doing fine. As far as we know, no one has ever applied this type of procedure to a donor kidney. Dr. Robert Montgomery of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine led the surgical team. The 3 -1/2hr surgery, performed on Tuesday the 3rd Feb. 2009, removed the need for a five to six inch incision in the abdomen of the patient. A 48 year old woman, from Lexington Park, who donated her kidney to her nice instead, she has only a few small scars on her abdomen. Doctors made a smile shaped opening in the back of her vagina and popped in an inflatable bag through a tube to hold the incision open. The kidney was then pulled out intact. The patient had less pain and a shorter recovery time, benefits that could give confidence more kidney donations. Trans vaginal kidney removals have been done beforehand to remove cancerous kidneys that endanger a patient’s health, but not for healthy kidney donation. |
