Religions Should Be Avoided From Politics.
By Mohideen Basha
Secular minded people condemn the stimulation of religion in politics whereas religious diehards believe that religion is the foundation of politics. Is the latter view dependable with the secular character of our Country? What will be the long term effects of integration the religion and politics? The answer to these questions will choose the acceptable relation between religion and politics. Religion gives sheep's clothing to politics and politics donates religion with the glamour of politics. Religion brings out faith from the common man whereas politics make use of this faith. Religious faiths push back the reasoning power and politicians having passionate for power can have their way. Democracy is abridged to dictatorship if 'religion-political' leaders are in power and if they are not in power they spoil in disruptive activities for coming in power. Terrorism in some third world countries is authorized and encourages the religious fanatics. Religious places have become the suitable place of refuge for the terrorists and threat to religion is the justification of terrorism. Religion gives sheep's clothing to politics and politics donates religion with the glamour of politics. Religion brings out faith from the common man whereas politics make use of this faith. Religious faiths push back the reasoning power and politicians having passionate for power can have their way. Religion is nothing more than a package of outdated rituals, worn-out customs and irrelevant practices. As it is eradicated from practical life; it is not in touch with the realities and demands of the present day life. It suspends the reasoning power and makes human thinking senseless. It is today a powerful opiate for the masses; with the help of religion they are drugged into antagonistic and dangerous state of thinking. They cannot be influenced; they confirm their chauvinism and never try to change them. They become adoration and repose full faith in their leaders. Instead of educating tolerance they become intolerant to other religious groups. All of this is mismatched with the democratic spirit which needs broad mindedness, open mind, belief in reason and faith in the potentialities of the common man. Clearly if we want to weaken our democracy we may allow religion to have incursions in politics. Mahatma Gandhi of India used to say, "My religion is my politics and my politics is my religion. If religion stands for more qualities like love for truth, faith in God, love for human beings it would sermonize politics. This is the action, what we need today. In a world where respect for human life is at its lowest ebb, where politics is acknowledged with cheating and political leaders are oblivious of moral considerations we need politics imbued with morality. Anyhow, politics as a partner of religion is more dangerous. Religion with diametrically opposed practices may lead to breakdown. Religious dogmatism breeds on illiteracy which is available on a large scale in third world countries. So religion should be a private affair having nothing to do with the public affairs. It can be achieved only through over hauling of outlook. |

I agree with Thomas Jefferson who wrote on January 1, 1802, "... religion is a matter which lies solely between man & his god, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of separation between church and state."
Yes, government should be free of religion. How do you govern via religion when there are more than one set of religious beliefs? You can't.
Government can not be totally free of religion; people wiill hold onto their core spritual beliefs; from satanic to self-mutilation for purity. This is where the "law of the land prevails" ~ governing bodies pledge to uphold laws and when it is discovered they have not ~ the broken law also has remidies. Those who break the law should be equally punished. Example: Distributing illegal substances like crack cocaine should not be watered down for a PhD; but, held more accountable than a minor charged as an adult for the same act.
