Rocket Launches may ruin Ozone Layer. By Mohideen Basha of sukkran From earth bound space-debris, due to mid-space collisions, the satellite launchers have yet another fright to worry about. A group of well-known US space scientists has concluded that the discharges from the launch vehicles cause exhaustion of ozone layer in the earth’s stratosphere. Rocket launches were on the rise as more and more countries were coming forward to send their communication and earth observation satellites into space orbit. We are well aware that the Ozone layer in the stratosphere precludes the dangerous ultra violet radiation from the Sun striking the earth’s surface. The stratosphere begins at a height of 10km from the earth’s surface and extends up to 50km. The Ozone layer in this stratosphere prevents the dangerous ultra violet radiation from the sun. The propellants used to power the launch vehicles send out highly reactive molecules known as radicals. A single radical can cause the destruction of 10,000 ozone molecules. Fuels and oxidizers like poly butadiene and ammonium perchlorate are most harmful to ozone. They destroy ozone layer directly within the emission clouds of Rocket launching vehicles including space shuttles, Titan, Delta etc. The current Ozone exhaustion rates grow up to grave levels in the near future because of the growth being seen in space Industries.
